Not really.
My neighbor did an exceedingly excellent job of making me feel special on my birthday. (Darn her!) I was quite nervous as to how I could possibly return the favor. Then I realized the solution was simple.
Kidnapping.
With the help of her husband, I arranged a date and time to swoop in, tires squealing (not really, but would’ve been awesome), throw a bag over her head (nope, but I did consider it), toss her manfully into my vehicle (still no, but a girl can dream), and take her to a peaceful, scenic all-expenses-paid afternoon at a nearby winery.
It was maybe a half hour drive, and I was so excited I kept finding myself humming “On the Road Again” with gusto as my knee bounced up and down.
On my birthday, she had gotten her car professionally cleaned before picking me up. (Have I already said “Darn her”?) So Hubby and children not-so-professionally cleaned ours.
She also decorated her car for the occasion. Here’s the reminder photo:

Well, I did my best.

When I arrived at her house (three seconds after leaving mine), I handed her these, her favorite flowers…

and said, “Set these down, grab your purse and a sweater, and let’s go, Baby!”
Naturally, she was confused, but said, “Oh! Okay!”
I love people who are always ready for an adventure.
Another neighbor, by prearrangement, swooped out from her house across the street and hopped in at roughly the same time.

We drank wine, ate cheese and crackers, and talked for hours. It wasn’t entirely what I had had in mind, but it seemed like what she would enjoy.
Well in advance of this, I was putting out feelers. Sadly, she was dealing with her own bout with the ‘rona fairy at the time of this conversation:

I didn’t show up sporting a tattoo of her face on my arm, but I think I did all right. What do you think?

Sounds like the perfect Birthday get-together. I don’t have birthday stories, but I can say there have been many of them. Thanks for sharing, Betsy.

Good birthday stories? OMG…I have the best. One time, I was paraded around the room naked and got spanked!!
‘Course, this was the actual day of my birth. Sadly, no others have quite lived up to that level of excitement, but a fella can dream.

You are a delightful and fun friend!! And I loved that you all “drank wine, ate cheese and crackers, and talked for hours.”
And the car looks great so something else to celebrate!! Nice job celebrating your neighbor, friendship and the wisdom of getting older. At least that’s what I presume kept you from putting a bag on her head and throwing her into the car. 🙂

Hahaha. I’m not sure she would’ve appreciated the bag over the head, but it did cross my mind. I mean, could be scary, but also a fun adventure. If it happened to me, so long as I knew I wasn’t ACTUALLY in any danger, I probably would’ve loved it. But again, that’s me. 😛

How wonderful for you to have such awesome neighbors! I think you did great and a day in the wine country with friends sounds fabulous (although I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t arrive with your tires squealing and put a bag over her head).

I’m disappointed too, Janis. Sigh. Maybe next time. 😉

A girls’ birthday gathering at a winery sounds pretty spectacular to me. I’d say you did a great job. And hey, the car decorations rock! 😀

Thanks! It did seem like a great setting. Some of the car decorations had to come down almost immediately so she could sit, but the effect was there!

What a beautiful and fun looking crew! I would have loved to hang with you peeps at a CA winery! You did a nice kidnapping job and the car looked clean and festive.
Birthday stories? A friend of mine turned 60 and had a 60’s themed party, complete with attire and music. We all brought 60’s food. I brought rumaki, cause it’s yum! Normally, my friend group meets up at a winery or brewery for birthdays. But it’s not Cali quality wineries!

You are totally welcome to join us next time, Bijoux. I’ve salivated over your stories of hitting up restaurants and breweries, etc, in various places. I’d love to hit the town with you. 🙂
Even my wine snob father who is not a fan of CA has to admit that we have the best wine. Way back in the day, he’d bring a suitcase inside of a suitcase so he could transport wine back to Ohio “easily.”

I like the way your dad thinks! On our first trip to Napa in 2006, we brought back about 6 special bottles on the plane (carry on). Those were the days!

She set the precedent for me. I had no choice. 😉 But it was lots of fun, and I’m glad we were able to make it happen.

Now that you mention it, I’ve never been kidnapped and whisked away for my birthday either. Hmm… Diane, we both need to do something about this. Start dropping hints now. 😉

THere is everything to love and laugh about in this post. I forgot about the car decor surrounding your face! I might have to steal that this weekend! What great things to do, make each other smile, laugh and dance drunkenly on tables. Friends. Gotta love ’em!

Steal that this weekend? Is someone’s birthday to be celebrated this weekend?
The dancing drunkenly on tables will have to be saved for next time. 😉

My friend’s birthday is Sunday and we are going out to celebrate. Dancing drunkenly is not on the tables. I don’t drink!!!!! I’m telling you PIF, I am VERY dull.

“Dancing drunkenly is not on the tables.” —CM, you are so brilliant! I have never been drunk, nor do I ever intend to be, but under the right circumstances, I would dance briefly on a table just to know that I’d done it.
And you are far from dull, my friend. Have a lovely time on Sunday!

Well, truth be told, I did dance on a table. I wasn’t drunk. But MANY around me were and we all had a lovely time. Here’s the thing….I am NOT prone to dancing (because I cannot). But I ‘did’. One would have thought I was drunk!
You’re my favorite today for thinking I am not dull. It makes me feel good! Happy day to you!!! 🙂

You’ve done TKD before me… danced on a table drunkenly before me, even though not drunk. CM–I have so much to catch up on!

Dang, you’re a good friend! Anyone who’d kidnap me and take me to a winery is all that and a bag of chips!
What I’m saying is, if you should ever find yourself in New Jersey in November, you should totally kidnap me and take me to a winery.

Roger that, Mike. And if you’re ever in CA in September… which sounds like a far more agreeable situation, TBH. 😁

This is great! You guys look like you are having such a nice time and so scenic! What a nice group of friends you have to do that for each other 🧡
My friends kidnapped me on my 21st birthday- the scenario you first described- I was blindfolded and put in the back of a car where we drove to our college town Inn and the college men’s a capella group sang hbd to me (with my blindfold on). Followed by a lot of festive toasts into the night 😉🍺

Awh, what fun, BCM! You actually made me remember that before a dance in college, the guys blindfolded the girls and drove us all over, only to bring us back to campus and into one of the dorms where they had dinner ready. They were just trying to throw us off. What a night!

Hey, just because we did not get paid does not mean the van was not detailed to perfection. I mean, it wasn’t. The cleaning standards of our 4 year old were not very high; about up to his eyes…and he is about 3 feet tall…or something. We have it written down somewhere. Here…(stands up, puts hand about hip level) he is “this” tall. What were we talking about?

What a fun adventure! I love the photo of the decorated van window and your smiling face. I don’t know that I’d like to dance drunkenly on a table, but who am I to tell anyone else how to celebrate a birthday!
