Another belt, another ceremony, another baking adventure

But first, the test. As always, I messed a couple things up because testing makes me nervous, but I recovered quickly and my flubs may have gone unnoticed. Also, I got to do this:

That board was one piece until it met my elbow.

My daughter videoed this for me. I sent it to my mom and then to Sensei noting that I wasn’t too old to proudly show my mommy my board break. He responded:

And so, another belt for my rack. I had blue, my favorite color, the longest, and I’ll have that boring brown the shortest.

The girls’ red belts are beautiful. Hopefully I’ll get mine soon. That test requires kicking a board, so… yeah. Hopefully I don’t injure my good foot. But also, whatever. At this point, I no longer care.

I just hope the board doesn’t look like this:

For belt ceremony, we finally learned our lesson by baking our goodies not in what we *think* is plenty of time, but actually IS plenty of time. We still showed up late, but we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t.

Our offering started with simple apple cinnamon muffins, which smelled so good coming out of the oven, I just couldn’t resist.

Num num! They did not disappoint!

Then my youngest daughter got involved.

Cutting out a bit of the center.
Scooping in melted chocolate chips and replacing the lids.
Frosting and jelly beans to match the silicone baking cups.
And who doesn’t like sprinkles?
The artist with her masterpiece. Since you’re not supposed to put pics of your kids online, I did that whole black bar across the eyes thing, then decided to turn it into sunglasses.

I suggested Sensei bring his glove to the ceremony, so after stuffing our faces, he, Hubby, and I played catch in the gym while the kids played tag. All in all, best belt ceremony yet. 🙂

Would you want to break a board with your elbow? How about with your foot? Would you change anything about the bedazzled muffins?

  1. Congratulations! I have no desire to break anything, but I’m impressed by your mad skillz. The cupcakes are very artistic. Do you have to tell people to not throw away the silicone wrappers?

  2. Good work on breaking a board and not a body part. That always impresses me. The only thing I’d change on the muffins is the destination – not one ended up at my house …

and no, I won’t be breaking boards with a body part – I have power tools for that kind of thing.

  3. You had your favorite color for the longest – now that’s a wonderful way to look on the bright side. Great belt ceremony cupcakes and that text with Sensei is money!! Now you can always tease him about the one time he was sincere! 🙂

But most of all – congratulations, dear Betsy! Your resilience and determination is amazing!

  4. Yes, breaking board IS fun: with the heel, the ball of the foot, an elbow, a fist, a head, two boards at a time; wonder if he will have you do a brick break for black belt?!

  5. the ostrich in the board is pretty amazing and I see you still have the boot on – but seems like you are doing well and breaking boards
I am not a cupcake eater but I think I would make an exception for the kind you make – inserting chocolate like that – oh my

      • Well funny you should mention the thing about apple cinnamon bread – and muffins and all that – because back in 1990s I thought eating a bean muffin (or carrot one) was a good breakfast – lol – but I was starting my day with CAKE/ just under the guise of a breakfast muffin!
        Sigh
Anyhow – fun food but such empty in the way of nutrition and some baked goods pull from health even more if they have dangerous canola or vegetable oil (which is not good for humans)
        –/
I have a keto recipe that uses almond flour flour – eggs and avocado oil as a base and it makes great goodies / and I can add cassava flour or coconut flour to change the texture and use stevia salt and baking soda / and Cana add nuts and chocolate too
I guess it is the glyphosphates in regular flour that makes me feel sick
        Anyhow –
I am glad I don’t have muffins as meal to start my day (or sugar cereal) because it just wasn’t good
        -/
Oh and I read your comment about the boot and not waiting it out to be fully healed –
        Good call!
As long as you can work it – I say go for it and sounds like you are doing just that

    • Concurred; apple cinnamon muffins are just fine as is. I was going to claim the leftover tops but then your daughter went and “capped”, then frosted, then jeweled, then sprinkled, then… let it be said she’s already learned the value of a thorough effort. Also, her frosting technique should remain a secret – very professional look there. Finally, I’ll refrain from learning the belt colors remaining for your board. Better (Betsy-er?) to see them stack up as you earn them.

      • You’re terrific, Dave. 🙂 And to be sure, that muffin I ate fresh from the oven was the best version of it, in my opinion, though they looked and tasted great all dressed up too. And I shall leave you in suspense as to the belt colors then! 😛

      • Of course, your daughter did a wonderful job, so I would have probably rid myself of the frosting when no one was looking. Or, ate it separately, as I am not above doing that.

  7. You got spunk! Would you want to break a board with your elbow? NO. How about with your foot? Still NO! Would you change anything about the bedazzled muffins? Not a thing, they’re perfect. [I like the muffin *papers* that are plastic & reusable?]

  8. Earlier today, I pried off a board that had been screwed into the railing of our deck and tossed it over the side. What color belt does that earn me??

Err, great way to disguise your kid. Haha. (Is that really a rule? ‘Cause back in the day, my kids were all over my blog!)

  9. I can’t break things without dropping them first, so I couldn’t do that. And I’ll do Andrew one better: the cupcakes didn’t end up at his house. How about the cook moving closer to her lean and hungry grandmother?

  10. Geez Louise! I honestly was never sure breaking a board was a real thing. Color me impressed. And no, I’m not interested in breaking a board with my elbow, which would actually end up with me breaking my elbow with a board.
I love your daughter’s dedication to chocolate. In our house we call that behavior “mining” and I’m a black belt at it.
Sorry to do this, but your ostrich wood means I just have to show you this post I write before we were blog buddies:

    • Thank you, CM. 🙂

Sneak peak: next Monday I’m supposed to test for brown to get caught up to my girls. I’ll do a hand and foot break then. I hope Sensei doesn’t mind too much if I get these filmed. I want to remember them forever! Might be pretty fun to look back on when I’m 80. 🙂

And… of course you would, you TKD Queen!!

      • This is why you are my sensei from afar! Also, I am super scared for you to see how I do, because I have no doubt it will not live up to expectations. (My round kicks aren’t super high, for starters.) But LOVE your enthusiasm for me!! Thank you!! ❤ ❤ ❤
