Note: this is an old story, but I’m posting it now so our friends, who are all moving away, have it to remember us by.
Hubby and I met up for dinner with two other couples, one of which has a newborn. The other two couples drove together. Parking was scarce, so Hubby and I were grateful to arrive just as another car was leaving.
Dinner was great, the conversation fun and lasted hours. When it was time to leave, another car waited patiently for us to all hug goodbye in the parking lot so they could take our spot.
Hubby and I hadn’t gone far before the principal called, explaining that his car had been towed from the questionable parking spot he had found.
Hubby and I turned around to pick them, regretting that we had driven our little Ford Focus instead of the van. “That’s all right. We’ll squish,” the principal said.
And so it was that a principal, a vice principal, a dean of students, their wives, and a baby in a car seat fit into a tiny five-seater car.
The principal’s wife and I giggled as we endeavored to strap the seat belt around us both in the front seat.
“I feel so close to you now,” she said.
We joked that this was like college all over again. Indeed, I remember cramming people into a car on at least three occasions back in the day.
At a red light, the driver in the car next to us gave us a curious once-over. I commented how awesome (in a horrible way) it would be if a group of high schoolers from our school wound up at a light next to us.
Fortunately, the house we were headed to wasn’t far, as our 23-year-old car was noticeably sluggish getting there, particularly up a hill.
All in all, it was fun, reminiscent, and oh so silly.

Have you crammed lots of friends into one vehicle, in college or more recently?

It’s nice you helped them out, Ilsa, even if it was a crowded situation.

That’s a lot of people in such a little car! Did you sing clown car music?

Totally should have. … Whatever clown car music is. 😛

Just generic circus music 🙂

Oh, I hear ya. Yep. Sounds like we need a redo so we can get it right. 😉

I vote for “Send in the Clowns”. Not that you needed any more in that little car.

I think you showed amazing restraint.
A few perfectly placed jiu jitsu moves would have earned you a bit more space.

Not since college, but you did bring back some memories of parties in the woods and one or more cars either out of gas or just gave up the ghost.

The last time I was in a vehicle crammed full of people was in Midtown Manhattan and it was late at night and the Uber arrived, a bit smaller than anticipated, and we made it work for us. I sat on the floor, others sat on laps. That was maybe 10 years ago? We laughed.

Makes for fun memories! I’m surprised there was room on the floor for you.

Awww. Sounds like a mini-adventure and chance to be teenagers again (with seatbelts and a baby’s carseat). You all seem “very close” indeed. 😀

I’m happy it happened so we have the memory. They’re all moving away from us, and it’s very sad. On another occasion, we spent our wedding anniversary out to dinner with those four. It’s a real shame.

You always seem to have your camera at the ready for fond memories like this one. I need to be better about that… not to mention, I wouldn’t have to search the Web for photos!

Certainly helps that cameras come with our phones, which are generally attached to our hips. 🙂

I have squished illegally into convertibles, the back of pick-up trucks, and mashed far too many relatives in my car with a kayak. And done this on the interstate! No one tell my son.

Such a fun story. Close friendships such as these are such treasured blessings. Best wishes your couple friend on their move and new home!

Indeed. Both couples are moving away from us. It’s very sad.
But they seems happy, at least. (Fairly certain it’s not because they’re leaving us.)

I did try that once as a teen. I think we got eight teens into a buick … yeah not much of a challenge, but the next night we got seven of us in an AMC Pacer. That was much more challenging.

Sounds like you missed your calling as a rodeo clown.
I remember crowding into the back of a station wagon with a bunch of cousins. One of those retro jobs that had backward-facing seats in the rear. Tight fit notwithstanding, we sure had a lot of fun making faces at the cars driving behind us. Based on their expressions, they were not amused.
Bunch of fuddy duddies, amirite?

OMG–those cars with backward facing seats! Why are those no longer a thing? (Okay, I can think of a couple of reasons.)
Fuddy duddies for sure.
You inadvertently brought up interesting food for thought with the clown comment. As much as I despise being the center of attention, I wonder if it would be different if I were in costume and no one knew who I was. Hmm.

You totally want to rock a clown costume now, don’t you?

I’ll probably avoid a lot of embarrassment if I just wear a clown costume everywhere I go. If I do something stupid, people will assume it’s part of an ongoing act.
Why don’t more people do that?

Oh, come on admit it Ilsa, you were trying to see how many people you could cram into a Ford Focus to win a Guinness Book of World. Ha, ha.

Pingback: PRIORHOUSE INTERVIEW with Midwest Mark @Mark Petruska (and July 1st if BLINK 182 DAY) – priorhouse blog
When in high school I was crammed into a little Volkswagen with 4 college age boys, 3 college-age girls and me and another high school friend. We drove all around town and trying to get out of the car was harder than getting us all piled in.
